How to get hired in the oilfield

  1. Get your CDL. A Class A CDL is the fastest way in. Water transfer, sand hauling, crude hauling and hot shot companies are always hiring. Hazmat and tanker endorsements make you more valuable. See CDL jobs.
  2. Take H2S and safety training. Many locations require H2S awareness training and a safety orientation such as SafeLand or PEC. These courses are short and offered in Midland, Odessa, Hobbs and Carlsbad. Some employers pay for them after hiring.
  3. Start as a helper or trainee. Floorhand, roustabout, yard hand and operator-trainee jobs teach you on the job. See entry-level jobs.
  4. Be ready for rotations. Many field jobs run on a hitch (like 14/7), often with housing or per diem. See hitch and rotation jobs.
  5. Apply directly with the company. Every job here links straight to the employer's own application, so your application goes to the right place.

A hitch is a work rotation, such as 14/7 (14 days on, 7 days off) or 7/7. Rotational jobs often come with housing or per diem because crews work far from home.
