Common Oilfield Certifications (H2S, SafeLand, TWIC, OSHA 10) and Where to Get Them in West Texas and SE New Mexico
The right safety cards won't replace experience, but they can get your application past the first screen and let you start work without waiting on training. This guide explains the four certifications Delaware Basin job seekers ask about most (H2S, SafeLand/PEC, TWIC and OSHA 10), how long each one lasts, and where to take them locally in Midland, Odessa, Hobbs and Carlsbad.
For a quick overview of every card employers mention, plus jobs that list certifications today, see our oilfield certifications page.
Before you pay for anything: many employers train new hires themselves or reimburse the cost after you're hired. If you already have an offer, ask the company which cards they want and whether they'll cover them.
H2S awareness (H2S Clear)
What it is. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S, also called sour gas) is a toxic gas found in many Permian wells and facilities. H2S awareness training covers how to recognize it, use gas monitors and breathing equipment, and get out safely. The industry training standard is ANSI/ASSP Z390.1 (updated in 2024) (ANSI).
How long it takes. The common "H2S Clear" class through PEC/Veriforce is a four-hour course (New Mexico Junior College).
How long it lasts. Plan on renewing every year. Local trainers list the PEC H2S Clear refresher as required annually (FORE Safety), and the Z390.1 standard defines "annual" as within 365 days. Some operators also want their own site-specific H2S training.
Who asks for it. Many operators require it before you go on location. That includes lease operators, pumpers, vac truck and water haul drivers, roustabouts and most field service jobs.
SafeLand USA / PEC Basic Orientation
What it is. A one-day general oilfield safety orientation that many operators require from contractor employees. It covers hazard recognition, PPE, lockout/tagout, confined space awareness and your rights under OSHA. Veriforce, the company behind PEC training, now teaches it as Basic Orientation 7.0. That course replaced the SafeLandUSA Basic 2021 course in November 2024 (Veriforce).
How long it takes. One day, about 6 hours of instruction.
How long it lasts. Veriforce says the training does not expire. You'll get a physical and digital photo ID card, and your record goes into Veriforce's database so employers can verify it. Individual companies may still require their own refreshers.
Tip: Ask the employer whether they want "SafeLand," "PEC Basic," or a specific operator orientation. These names often get used for the same card, but it's worth confirming.
TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
What it is. A federal ID card from the TSA, required for unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels (TSA). In the Permian, it mostly matters for midstream, terminal and trucking jobs that send you to Gulf Coast ports and marine terminals. Most Basin field jobs don't need one, so get it if a posting asks for it.
How you get it. Pre-enroll online, then visit a TSA enrollment center for fingerprints, a photo and document checks. You can find the nearest center through TSA's website.
Cost and how long it lasts. TSA lists $127 for new applicants, $119 for online renewal and $60 for a replacement card. The fee is good for five years. TSA recommends applying at least 60 days before you need the card, because processing can take more than 45 days.
CDL bonus: If you hold a valid TWIC and your licensing state accepts it, TSA charges a reduced $41 fee for the hazmat endorsement threat assessment (TSA). New Mexico is on TSA's list of states that accept TWIC for the reduced HME fee. More on endorsements in our oilfield CDL driver guide.
OSHA 10 (and OSHA 30)
What it is. OSHA's Outreach Training Program offers 10-hour and 30-hour classes for construction and general industry. The 10-hour class gives workers basic hazard awareness, while the 30-hour class is aimed at supervisors and people with safety duties (OSHA).
Is it required? OSHA itself says the Outreach program is voluntary, and an OSHA card "is not considered a certification or license." Some employers and job sites still require it, so it's common in safety, construction, facility and midstream postings.
How long it lasts. OSHA says construction and general industry course completion cards have no expiration date, though employers can set their own recency rules.
Where to get it. Only OSHA-authorized outreach trainers can issue the card. Ask any trainer to show their current authorized trainer card, and check OSHA's list of accepted online providers if you take it online.

Which cards should you get first?
- Brand new to the oilfield: H2S Clear plus SafeLand/PEC Basic Orientation. Together they're about a day and a half of class. Read how to get an oilfield job with no experience.
- Driving jobs: A CDL with the tanker endorsement first, then H2S. Add hazmat if you'll haul crude or chemicals.
- Midstream, terminal or port work: Add TWIC if postings ask for it.
- Safety, facility or supervisor track: OSHA 10, then OSHA 30.
Frequently asked questions
How long is an H2S card good for?
Plan on one year. H2S Clear refresher training is commonly required annually, and the ANSI Z390.1 standard defines annual as within 365 days. Some operators require their own site-specific H2S training too.
Does SafeLand expire?
According to Veriforce, its SafeLand-accredited Basic Orientation 7.0 training does not expire. Individual employers or operators may still require periodic refreshers or their own orientation.
Do I need a TWIC card to work in the Permian Basin?
Usually not. TWIC is required for unescorted access to secure maritime facilities, so it mainly matters for midstream, terminal and trucking jobs that go to ports. Get one if the job posting asks for it.
How much does a TWIC card cost?
TSA lists $127 for new applicants and $119 for online renewal. The card is valid for five years. Apply at least 60 days before you need it.
Is OSHA 10 required for oilfield jobs?
OSHA does not require it; the Outreach program is voluntary. Some employers and job sites do require it, and the 10-hour card does not expire.
Will employers pay for my certifications?
Many do, either by training new hires in-house or reimbursing the cost after hiring. Ask before you pay out of pocket.
